What is a Healthy School?

What is the Kirklees Healthy School Programme?

  • The Kirklees Healthy School Programme is part of a National Programme which aims to help schools become healthier. This is based on evidence that healthier children perform better academically and education plays an important role in promoting health, particularly among those who are socially and economically disadvantaged.

National Healthy School Programme (NHSP)

  • The National Healthy School Standard was launched in October 1999. It’s a joint initiative from the Department of Health and the Department for Children, Schools and Families
  • All Local Education Authorities have their own version of the Healthy School Standard.
  • There is a National Healthy School Status (NHSS) Award that schools can achieve. For more information on this log on to www.healthyschools.gov.uk
  • The Kirklees Healthy Schools Team can support you in achieving this award

The Kirklees Healthy School Programme (KHSP)

  • The KHSP is jointly managed by health and education services
  • Suzy Rhodes is the Co-ordinator based in Health with NHS Kirklees. Graham Hofmann is the Education Lead based with the Learning Service, part of Kirklees Council.
  • Kirklees has the Kirklees Healthy School Standard Gold (KHSSG) which expands on the National Healthy School Award
