As a result of increasing obesity levels and low levels of physical activity amongst children and young people, the government has introduced a target to get more children and young people taking part in high quality PE and sport. As a result of this, the government has provided local authorities with funding in order to ensure this target is met.
The PESSCL Strategy (Physical Education, School Sport, and Club Links) has now become the PESSYP Strategy, which stands for PE and Sport Strategy for Young People. The PESSYP strategy builds upon the successes of PESSCL, embracing the new money identified by the government.
PESSYP includes all that was PESSCL and embraces the wider community. It recognises the role key partners will make especially in the transition from school to community sport.
All schools are required to provide a minimum of two hours of high quality PE and Sport for all 5 - 16 year olds per week within the curriculum. In addition to this, all children and young people aged 5 - 19 should be offered opportunities to participate in a further three hours per week of sporting activities provided through schools, clubs and community providers. This is referred to as the five hour offer.
There is a range of support within your School Sports Partnership to help you to achieve the five hour offer.
If you think that you need further support to develop PE and Sport in your school then you can contact professionals from within your School Sports Partnership.
