Physical activity

Regular physical activity produces overall physical, psychological and social benefits and helps with:

Physical inactivity in childhood and adolescence is associated with a range of health conditions, including increased risk of obesity and diabetes. 

All children, whatever their abilities, need to be physically active.  Activity may be particularly helpful for the physical and psychological well-being of children with a weight problem.

Children and young people should be encouraged to participate in a range of physical activitities within curriculum time as well as out of school hours.  Pupils should understand how physical activity should be a part of their everyday life,  can help them to be healthy and understand the benefits that this can bring. 

Children and young people should be consulted regarding the physical activity opportunities on offer and schools should identify barriers to participation and seek to break them down.
