Smoking

Key Facts about Children and Smoking

•  Children become aware of cigarettes at an early age. Three out of four children are
aware of cigarettes before they reach the age of five.

• Children often start to experiment with smoking in early teenage years. More than
80% of smokers take up the habit by the age of 18.

• Smoking may be seen as an act of rebellion or a way to lose weight, or it may simply
be done as a result of peer pressure.

• Children are more likely to smoke if one or both of their parents smoke and parent’s
approval or disapproval of the habit is also a critical factor.

Healthy Schools - Smoke Free

Healthy schools are expected to comply with the law and be smoke free. Schools must make sure that their smoking policy reflects the legislation and it applies to every person in the school setting - including children. An effective policy is one that the whole school is made aware of and which has a dedicated champion for tackling smoking.

School provision

All pupils learn about the harm to their health posed by smoking. The national curriculum science order which is statutory, states in relation to tobacco that all pupils in key stages 2 to 4 must be taught about the effects of tobacco. However this is a statutory minimum - it is expected that schools use the PSHE education framework to extend this provision.

The public health department at Kirklees NHS is keen to move away from one off health days that schools often hold and move to a more consistent, comprehensive school approach. Methods that prove more successful are: youth advocacy, de-normalising smoking amongst adults, limit tobacco advertising and keeping the prices of cigarettes high. Public health has partnership work in progress with trading standards so if the school has intelligence of local shops that are selling to your pupils, please get in touch with Rebecca Elliott.

Pupils that want help

Anybody who comes into contact with smokers should be trained in brief interventions which teach you how to raise the issue effectively. If you come across a pupil who wants to stop there are 3 ways in which you can help them.

Option 1

Refer to the in-house advisor (usually a school nurse) who has completed their intermediate advisor training course.

Option 2

Refer to the specialist stop smoking service which has dedicated young people advisors (all schools should have referral forms to refer individual young people)

Option 3

If there are a group of young people (more than 6), that want to stop, the specialist service can come and run the sessions in the school environment, with support from the dedicated lead in the school.
