  • In line with other curriculum areas, the PSHCE Co-ordinator has QTS

PSHCE programme throughout all years in Primary, Middle, Secondary and Special schools.

A minimum of 50 minutes per week for secondary and middle schools.

It would be very good practice to enhance the programme with additional 'theme days', but such days should not be used as an alternative to a comprehensive PSHCE programme.

  • Detailed PSHCE programme in place, showing schemes of work for each year
  • Examples of lesson planning
  • Where external schemes are used, there should be evidence of how such material has been adapted to fit the needs of pupils in the school

Appropriate CPD is made available to staff.

Attempts are being made to move towards specialist teacher provision in Middle and High schools.

  • A record of staff CPD related to PSHCE
  • Monitoring the impact of CPD
  • The school has a member of the teaching staff with PSHE Certification or is actively encouraging teaching staff to participate in the programme
  • In line with other curriculum areas, appropriate time is given to team meetings

Active citizenship is a key feature of the pupil school experience

  • Planning to show opportunities given for active citizenship in each year group
  • Examples of work done by pupils, projects and initiatives
  • Pupil involvement in shaping active citizenship opportunities and giving feedback

The school makes the best use of the School Nurse Framework to plan collaborative support.

Schools strive to make good use of local health related information to shape the PSHCE programme.

High schools make appropriate use of information from the Year 9 Health questionnaire to shape the PSHCE programme.

  • Written evidence of planning between the school and School Nurse in line with School Nurse Framework
  • Examples of joint lesson plans
  • Evidence of how the school has attempted to use local health information and/or Year 9 Health questionnaire information.

Secondary schools should give the opportunity to access on site confidential services

  • Appropriate room available for at least one session per week
  • Written protocols in place and agreed between school nurse and school
  • Evaluation of the service between school nurse and school, but also involving pupils
  • Discussion between appropriate groups about the extension of the confidential services to include condoms and advice, pregnancy testing and screening for Chlamydia

Protocols in place relating to the administration of medicines and creams, etc

  • Written protocol in place
  • Evidence of how this is communicated to staff, pupils and parents/carers

Where appropriate, pupils have individual health care plans

  • Written health care plans in place
  • Evidence of how such plans are communicated to staff, pupils and parents/carers

The school makes good use of Guidance for working with outside agencies to support PSHCE

  • Written evidence of joint planning with outside agencies
